A further state of flux…

The site theme will probably keep changing over the next few days. I’m testing out a couple of different Wordpress themes upon which to base my forthcoming redesign. This site has existed in other peoples designs for (almost) long enough!!!

And So Opens a Brave New World…

A couple of days ago I received my copy of Jeremy Keith’s “DOM Scripting: Web Design with JavaScript and the Document Object Model“. I’d been thinking about checking it out for some time and a forthcoming project will require me to finally get a handle on JavaScript so the time seemed right. I really couldn’t be more pleased with it!

I’ve been trying to learn JavaScript for a couple of years, pretty much ever since I started learning to hand-code in (X)HTML and CSS. I bought a book or two as I had for the other languages but could never take to it. The examples never seemed logical enough for me and the consistent mentionings of DOM did nothing more than confuse – it always seemed that you’d learn how to sniff for different available DOMs in browsers but never it was satisfactorily explained why this was useful. With this book, that has all changed.

Mr Keith has a clear and logical style of writing. I’ve so far read through about half the book without testing any examples but I feel that I’m already beginning to understand the basics of JavaScript and using it to manipulate the DOM. Of course, his focus on the DOM as a complimentary Web-Standard to (X)HTML and CSS also helps drive the point into my increasingly addled brain. I look forward to spending some time with this book and experimenting with the evident power of this technology. I feel confident that I will finally be able to fill in the gaps in what I’ve previously been able to accomplish with websites that I’ve built. Watch out, 2006 is the year of the DOM …

New Photos Page

You’ll notice that I now have a new photos page on the site. I’m testing out a Wordpress plugin called “FAlbum” and this page is the result. It pulls in my photos and photosets from FlickR and displays them in Gallery form. After a little faffing around getting the template right, I’m quite pleased with how it’s working so far.

Please leave a comment and let me know what you think…

The return of BryanDavis.info

Today, I finally managed to finish enough of the redesign over at BryanDavis.info to actually put the site back up. It’s not entirely finished but as near as dammit! This marks the conclusion of a process which I envisaged taking a few days and has actually taken about 9 weeks!!

I’m pretty pleased with how it’s turning out, having gone through a couple of versions of it that I wasn’t too happy with, so despite a couple of rough edges in the stylesheet, I decided to post it again – at least my Dad will have something to look at now!!! The design I settled on was inspired by the recent reworking of A List Apart; in fact, who am I kidding? Aside from the lack of 4-column layout in parts, it’s basically the same.

Anyway, please take a look and see if there’s anything glaringly wrong. As I say, there’s a few things I need to tweak – not least re-integrating the Event Calendar into the Wordpress templates. I’ve not bothered with that yet as I plan to write it into a more concise form that works within Wordpress itself. That’ll take a little time since my PHP skills aren’t up to much and I’m working on 2 other sites just now, as well as needing to re-theme this site!! The never-ending learning curve continues!!!

Besides, first things first – I must write down the story of my trip to Greece last week. Never have I been involved in such a shambles. I’ll be back with the full story as soon as I can…..

A Work In Process

Sorry for the continual switching around of the visual stylings of this site. I’m still trying to get the design settled while simultaneously working on 3 other sites and playing the show!!I hope to get something final sorted in the next couple of weeks – in the meantime, please be patient and don’t be alarmed if the theme changes again.

I’ll be back….
