Bye-bye Bessie…

Bye-bye Bessie...

Bye-bye Bessie…

My old Vauxhall Corsa; Bessie parked at the car lot after I traded her in. Bye-bye Bessie….

Uploaded by tptboy on 18th August, 2005.

This is Bessie, my beloved old Vauxhall Corsa, who I traded in yesterday after years of happy motoring. I hope she finds a good home and doesn’t end up, too soon, in the great scrapyard in the sky – or indeed one down here on Earth…

Week 1 of HTML and XHTML for CSS now available

The following has been reproduced from a message sent to the WSG Announce List.

It’s been a very long time, but Westciv are finally running their
free courses again. Week 1 of HTML and XHTML for CSS is now online.

http://www.westciv.com/courses/free/index.html

This course gives a solid theoretical and practical foundation to
standards based markup, covering such subjects as

  • the theory behind standards
  • the correct use of structured markup: all the basic elements and
    attributes, including tables and forms
  • valid HTML and the validation process
  • accessibility

It’s probably a bit basic for most people who’ve been on WSG for any
length of time, but it’s a great place to send any colleagues or
friends who are starting out.

This is the full self paced course usually sold online, available for
free in weekly installments. The only limitation is that you have to
keep coming back to the site every week to get the next section. It’s a
great way to really get the foundations of web standards right by
spending just 5 or 10 minutes every week.

Cephalotrumpetably!?!

When reading this article about ways to find good domain names the other day, I was directed to a great web page featuring the Dislexicon; a tool for creating new words from a familiar root word.

I entered the word “Trumpet” and following are the results I received. I particularly enjoy the pronunciation guide and the definitions!!

  1. trumpetist (trumpet-ist):- one that performs, produces or believes in trumpet
  2. hydrotrumpet (hydro-trumpet):- water or liquid trumpet
  3. trumpetine (trumpet-ine):- made of or resembling trumpet
  4. trumpetaqueous (trumpet-aqueous):- watery trumpet
  5. antitrumpet (anti-trumpet):- opposite or opposing trumpet
  6. undertrumpet (under-trumpet):- beneath or below trumpet
  7. foretrumpetisation (fore-trumpet-isation):- process or result of doing or making before or in front of trumpet
  8. thermotrumpet (thermo-trumpet):- heat of trumpet
  9. trumpetation (trumpet-ation):- process, state or action of trumpet
  10. macrotrumpet (macro-trumpet):- long, large trumpet
  11. monotrumpet (mono-trumpet):- one or a single trumpet
  12. overtrumpet (over-trumpet):- excessive trumpet
  13. semitrumpet (semi-trumpet):- half or partial trumpet
  14. pentatrumpetise (penta-trumpet-ise):- to cause to be or to become five trumpet
  15. aquatrumpet (aqua-trumpet):- water trumpet
  16. cephalotrumpetably (cephalo-trumpet-ably):- performing in a manor worth of head trumpet
  17. pseudotrumpeteous (pseudo-trumpet-eous):- having the nature of false or deceptive trumpet
  18. dicttrumpet (dict-trumpet):- talk or say trumpet
  19. brevtrumpetgenic (brev-trumpet-genic):- producing, produced by, or suitable for short trumpet
  20. ornithotrumpet (ornitho-trumpet):- bird trumpet
  21. trumpetable (trumpet-able):- capable or worthy of trumpet
  22. trumpetphobia (trumpet-phobia):- fear of trumpet
  23. carnotrumpet (carno-trumpet):- flesh or meat trumpet
  24. trumpetization (trumpet-ization):- process or result of doing or making trumpet
  25. trumpetosis (trumpet-osis):- abnormal condition or process of trumpet

My favourite is definitely “cephalotrumpetably”. So much so that I even bought it as a domain name!! Why not try it for yourself?

First Impressions…

I got the new mouthpiece on Saturday morning and my first impressions?

Fan – ******* – tastic!!!

It sounds great and, although a little different to get used to, feels much easier to play. The response is great, articulation noticeably clearer and the sound is more colourful in all registers. The high register sounds great and slots much more easily. Once I’ve really had time to get my chops back in shape; i.e. when I have get my next day off in 2 weeks time – it’s going to be alarming!!!

I’ll be back with more about this before the end of the week!

What will the PRANA hold?

When I was in New York back in May, I finally bit the bullet and ordered the new “PRANA” version of my Trumpet mouthpiece. I’ve been playing Monette pieces (specifically the B1-5L) since the summer of 1997. Despite the high initial outlay, I’ve never looked back. They simply are that good!!

When Dave Monette announced the new PRANA range a couple of years ago I looked on with interest, unsure as to whether the even higher outlay was worth the fuss. My question was answered when I spent some time hanging with Brian Lynch – he let me have a try on a couple of different Monette PRANAs that he uses and they were simply fantastic. It look some time before I felt that I could afford it – the price tag is $315 (US) – but I finally got to it. The only trouble has been that, as the B1-5L is a somewhat rarely used model, there is quite a production waiting list. I ordered it from Dillons and they estimated that it would take 3-4 weeks.

I finally got the email saying that it had been shipped to me on Wednesday this week, approximately 11 weeks later, and so I’ll being picking it up from my local UPS depot tomorrow morning. I can’t wait to see how it plays and, in fact, won’t have to since I’m playing Lead on 2 shows tomorrow evening!

I’ll be back in the next week or so to pass on my impressions of the new mouthpiece. Here’s hoping it lives up to expectations…
